Money laundering is a highly recurring crime in today’s digital world. Imposters disguise their illegal funds in various ways that harm the business operations of legitimate entities. They use these funds to conduct illicit activities, such as human trafficking and insider trading. According to a 2023 report, money laundering represented a risk index score of 5.38 in Guatemala. Imposters accumulate illicit funds by following three stages of money laundering. These money laundering stages allow criminals to convert unauthorized funds into legal assets. The money laundering risks can be mitigated by incorporating AML screening solutions.

What are the 3 Phases of Money Laundering?

Money laundering is the process of acquiring monetary funds from illegal sources and converting them into assets that appear legitimate. Imposters transform these funds into a legitimate format by following three separate stages. These are:

    Placement in Money Laundering

Money laundering placement begins when the imposters turn large illicit monetary funds into smaller groups and secure them in legitimate financial systems. They send the illegally acquired money into legal bank accounts, or sometimes, they use it to buy tangible assets. Imposters use these fund sources and invest them in the gaming and real estate industry, where they can easily conceal the source of funds. They make various monetary transactions that create confusion for the banking firms. Money launderers use another strategy, blending the illicit funds with legal funds to conceal their sources. They also move these funds abroad, smuggling the underlying monetary funds.

    Layering in Money Laundering

In the layering stage of money laundering, the illegal funds are moved various times across different bank accounts. This stage is often related to disguising the authentic source of these unauthorized and illicit funds. They layer the money by using these funds to purchase tangible assets. They continue this buying and selling process until they make it impossible for financial institutions to verify their original fund’s source. They finally sell these assets and use the money that now appears to be white money. They conduct a chain-hopping process where they transform and move digital currencies into various blockchains.

    Integration Stage of Money Laundering

The integration is the last stage of money laundering. In this stage, the funds are returned to the original money launderer’s accounts and integrated into the legal financial accounts. Now, they are free to use these funds wherever they want. They usually use these funds to purchase a property asset using shell companies. Sometimes, they create their own counterfeit organization and assign a loan to themselves. Money launderers use advanced methods to create fake invoices to validate their financial transactions. They acquire the black money through foreign trade, reducing the suspicions involved in these transactions. The ultimate aim of these imposters is to be able to purchase luxurious assets with illicit monetary funds and sell them to make their funds appear legitimate and authentic.

Where do Money Launderers Store their Illicit Funds?

Most commonly, money launderers store their illicit funds in financial institutions, such as banks. They convert the illicit funds into legal sources by making financial transactions through the banking sector. Online businesses are also harmed by the imposters as they use digital currency platforms to commit money laundering because these sectors are mostly decentralized.

The imposters use the real estate industry to layer the monetary sources by using these funds and hiding them by purchasing a property asset. They use e-commerce platforms to use illicit funds to purchase goods and later sell them to minimize the source of illicit funds. These various industries are exploited during the money laundering process and they must be protected to ensure business operations for these industries.

How Does AML Screening Prevent Money Laundering Attempts?

Anti-money laundering (AML) screening incorporates high-level machine learning solutions to mitigate the existence of money laundering attacks. AML solutions require the companies to conduct a thorough due diligence process to identify the risk profiles of all the related customers. The customers that are most likely to be involved in money laundering thefts are those that appear on the official watchlists. Companies must validate their identities against politically exposed persons (PEP) lists, exit control lists, and criminal watchlists. AML screening prevents such entities from accessing the services provided by different industries. They monitor their risk profiles and financial histories to get a broader picture of their financial activities.

    Summing It Up

Money laundering is a very recurring financial crime that affects the business operations of many industries. Imposters convert illicit funds into legitimate sources through three stages of money laundering. In each stage, they try to conceal their funds sources and purchase legitimate assets to make them appear legal. Companies must utilize the AML screening solution to prevent the imposters from harming their business operations. It checks the customers against international watchlists to examine their risk profiles using an enhanced due diligence process, preventing them from accessing legitimate sources.
