Advantages of registering a business in Europe

Running your own business in the European Union offers many benefits, including the following ones:

    • Low tax burden: Europe offers various tax regimes and incentives that allow entrepreneurs to minimize their tax obligations. You cannot completely avoid paying taxes on the continent but some countries allow making your taxes as low as possible.
    • No double taxation in some European countries: Thanks to agreements between countries, entrepreneurs who set up a business abroad often avoid being taxed twice on their income.
    • Developed economic environment: Business owners have access to a wide range of financial management tools, liquidity options, and credit resources.
    • Foreign bank account: Provides access to Europe’s banking systems known for their high standards of service, security, and confidentiality.
    • Stable political and economic systems: This stability creates favorable conditions for business development.
    • Options for business visas or residence permits: Many European countries offer programs that allow foreign entrepreneurs to obtain various types of visas or permits for residence and work.
    • Access to the international market: Registering a company abroad grants entry to the European market, one of the largest and most developed in the world. Entrepreneurs can find new clients and partners, expand their business footprint, and boost profitability.
    • Prestige: Registering a company in Europe is associated with high-quality products and services, innovation, and social responsibility. The good reputation can attract new clients or investors.

Where to start a business in Europe

Many are curious about the easiest places to register a company and the best types of businesses to open in Europe. Here’s a closer look at the process in some of the most favorable countries.

    United Kingdom

Although the UK has left the EU, it remains a highly prestigious jurisdiction. While it is not an offshore zone, registering a company online in the UK takes only a few days and you can manage the company remotely, which makes business operations much easier.

If you’re considering company registration in the UK, you’ll be glad to know there are no strict requirements for minimum capital, number of shareholders, or board members – a single person can fulfill all roles.

In the UK, there are several convenient business structures: LP, LLP, and LTD, each with its own benefits and unique features.

The standard corporate tax rate is 19% (26% for businesses with profits over £250,000 per year). Standard capital gains tax applies. If a non-resident registers a company in the UK, corporate tax is not applied.

    Cyprus

For those thinking about starting a business in Cyprus, here are some highlights.

Cyprus is not an offshore zone, which makes it especially attractive for entrepreneurs looking for transparent and legitimate operations. One of the main advantages of registering a company in Cyprus is the opportunity to manage your business remotely, along with the benefit of obtaining a residence permit.

As for taxes in Cyprus, the annual fee for non-residents is €350 and the capital gains tax is 20%. VAT ranges from 0% to 19%, depending on the business activity. There is no VAT in banking and insurance, which gives business owners in these sectors a competitive advantage over those registered in other countries.

You can establish a company in Cyprus without being a citizen of the country. The registration process is simple and fast. There are no strict capital requirements, which makes Cyprus accessible for entrepreneurs with varying levels of investment.

Cyprus also allows for easy online processing of international payments.

It’s worth noting that you can quickly close a business in Cyprus and restart it within 20 years.

    Malta

Registering a company in Malta takes no more than two weeks. To start a business there, a registration fee is required. Its amount depends on the type of company and its share capital.

Each business type has minimum capital requirements and a minimum organizational structure (at least two people). At least 20-25% of the share capital has to be held in a bank account.

Registration documents can be submitted online, which simplifies the process significantly.

Advantages of registering a business in Malta:

    • Political and economic stability.
    • Freedom to choose any EU country for business operations.
    • No currency control.
    • A VAT rate of 18%, which is low by the EU standards.
    • Exemption from double taxation.

While Malta’s corporate tax rate of 35% may seem high, there are cases where some of the tax can be refunded. The tax can effectively be reduced to between 0% and 10%.

    Portugal

Portugal is an EU member and it provides businesses with access to the vast EU market. In addition, Portugal’s location on Europe’s western coast gives easy access to African and Latin American markets.

Starting a business in Portugal is ideal for those seeking EU residency. The country offers a broad range of investment opportunities, especially in IT, construction, agriculture, energy, and tourism. Portugal’s Golden Visa program remains one of the most attractive such programs in Europe.

Registering a business in Portugal is relatively straightforward and affordable: it costs around €510.

    Latvia

Latvia offers numerous business and investment opportunities and it is a great place to live and work. Its strong economy, high quality of life, and beautiful scenery attract foreigners.

One key advantage in Latvia is the immediate residency permit that you can receive upon registering a business. After five to six years of residency, you can apply for citizenship. Taxes are based on the type of production and products.

To establish a business, a minimum share capital of €3,000 is required. The VAT rate is 15% in Latvia.

    Lithuania

One of Lithuania’s biggest advantages is the opportunity to register a company remotely thus saving time and resources for business development.

Lithuania also has a relatively low VAT rate starting at 18%, which appeals to companies looking to boost the competitiveness of their products or services.

    Denmark

Denmark’s high standard of living and strong economy make it an attractive market for various business ventures.

Starting a business in Denmark is one of the fastest ways of obtaining a residence permit. However, company registration requires your personal presence and business operations should be carried out within the country. Denmark prioritizes joint ventures with Danish citizens – a logical approach for ensuring business success.

Denmark’s Government supports new companies and this makes it even more appealing for entrepreneurs.

A company in Europe means prestige

Starting a business in any European country offers numerous advantages. While some European nations are particularly favorable for company registration, each has its own ‘fine print’. We recommend thoroughly studying all details so your business starts yielding results from day one.
