Poker is one of the most well-known card games out there and one of the most popular too. It sets itself apart from other casino classics like Roulette with its mix of random chance and player decision-making.
But there’s also a lot of unique terminology involved in Poker, which players must understand before playing. So, read on as we explain some major terms used in casino Poker.
- Blinds
The blinds are mandatory wagers placed by two players before any cards are dealt. There is a small blind and a big blind, with different stakes required of each.
At the start of play, the blinds are usually the two players seated to the dealer’s left, with the blinds rotating around the table after each hand. This ensures that each player should contribute to the pot throughout the game, with the blinds used to create the starting pot.
- Ante
In certain varieties of Poker, the ante is a small amount that each player will place into the pot before the start of play. This is a standard requirement in variations like seven-card stud Poker, while others may not require an ante.
Antes function similarly to the blinds, creating a starting pot before proper play begins.
- Flop, turn, and river.
These three terms come as a set, referring to the set of community cards dealt face-up on the table, Texas Hold ’em, and Omaha Poker. The five community cards are combined with the cards in players’ hands to form a five-card hand.
The flop refers to the first three community cards dealt after the first round of wagers. The turn is the fourth community card, and the river is the final card, each dealt after fresh betting rounds.
- Hole cards
In games like Texas Hold ’em, each player is dealt a pair of private cards at the start of the game, which are dealt face-down. This means that only the player themselves knows what their hole cards are, allowing for bluffing throughout the game.
- Bet, call, raise, and fold.
This is another close grouping of terms, all referring to actions the player may take on their turn. In turn, they mean:
- Bet – placing chips into the pot as a wager at the start of a round.
- Call – matching the bet made by another player, staying in the game for the current round.
- Raise – increasing the existing bet, prompting other players to match or fold the new amount.
- Fold – giving up on the current hand and forfeiting the wager.
- All-in
This differs slightly from the other player’s actions, as going all-in means wagering all their chips. Players generally go all-in when they have a strong hand or want to prompt other players to fold.
- Check
This option is only available to players when no other bets have been made in the current round, allowing them to pass on making a bet. By checking, players can remain in the game if they don’t yet want to commit a stake, at least until another player decides to bet during the round.
